Lasik, which is short for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is now a well-known form of eye surgery that gained it’s popularity because the procedure is relatively painless and the recovery is quick. Before going into the procedure of lasik, here’s a brief explanation of how our eyes work. As you probably already know, our eye is made up of different parts. The cornea and the lens are the structures that are primarily responsible for our vision. Their function is to project a clear image on our retina. Any abnormalities or defects in our cornea and lens would result in vision problems such as myopia or nearsightedness, hyperopia or farsightedness, and astigmatism. These are the conditions that lasik surgery aim to correct.

Before you can be considered for lasik surgery, an eye surgeon will perform a complete examination of your eyes in order to determine if you are a good candidate for lasik procedure. Some conditions that may prohibit you from undergoing lasik are thin corneas and dry eye syndrome. Your eye surgeon may also advise against lasik if you are in a profession or engage in a hobby that increases your risk of getting hit in the eye. There are also special tests that will be done prior to lasik, which are designed to verify your prescription and guide your surgeon during the actual procedure. Lasik is done in a clinic as an outpatient procedure. You can be in and out of the clinic in just a few hours because lasik usually takes about five minutes. The actual length will vary depending on how high your prescription is. Improvement of vision can be felt right away but for some patients, it may take several days. As for lasik eye surgery cost, it would be best to inquire at a laser surgery clinic because prices do vary.
